The Kahikatea tree is Aotearoa’s tallest native tree. It is a tall, thin tree that can often be found “huddling” together in groups, supporting each other in all weather. In our Over Two room teachers create an environment where children are supported by kaiako and peers to reach their goals and aspirations.
Ruma Kahikatea teachers encourage children to take the next steps in their learning journey and become passionate learners who take responsibility for their own experiences. We aim to provide intentional teaching activities as well as take advantage of those important unplanned learning opportunities that arise both in the classroom as well as outside in the bush. In our uniquely placed centre, our children are not only provided with high quality resources to support their learning journey, but are empowered and encouraged to go beyond the four walls of a classroom and playground and explore their own interests and strengths, take risks and gain confidence in themselves as learners.
At our kura, we use intentional teaching strategies to thoughtfully enhance children’s learning and development. This involves purposeful planning, active engagement, and responsive interactions that align with each child’s interests and strengths. Kaiako observe, reflect, and scaffold experiences to extend thinking, promote problem-solving, and support social-emotional growth. Through open-ended questions, meaningful provocations, and rich language, we foster curiosity and creativity. Intentional teaching is woven into everyday moments—whether during play, routines, or group experiences—ensuring learning is holistic, culturally grounded, and empowering. This approach nurtures confident, capable learners who feel a strong sense of belonging and agency in their learning journey.
